Dear Mr. Moat,

The need for reliable, economical transportation led me to Uptown Motors where two months ago I purchased a new 4-cylinder Pelican harchback.
The car has proved to be neither reliable nor economical, and I think it's time to bring to your attention one of the car's more prominent defens: the automatic transmission sticks in low; doesn't shift until 45 mph, then jumps into high gear. This causes the motor to race at too many RPM's, resulting in excessive motor wear and terrible gas mileage (about 10 miles per gallon).
I have brought the Pelican in five times and explained what is wrong to your service manager. And five times I have had the car returned to me tin the same condition. On each occasion I emphasized that all is well on cold starts, and that the delayed shifting occurs only after the car has been running for a while.
The scenario is the same each time - the service manager writes up a ticket, hangs a number on the windshield and the car is driven onto the back lot. Presumably, several hours later a mechanic starts up the car, takes around the block and pronounces it okay.
I'm certainly no automotive expert, but it should be obvious to anyone that in order to even understand the problem the car must be allowed to warm up. I've asked the service manager to take my car home with him overnight and see for himself, but he says that's impossible.
No one at Uptown Motors takes the time to correct the problem because no one cares. I'll never understand what could be more important to a dealer's service department than to service the cars that particular dealer sells. But follow-up care is viewed as nuisance warranty work and given a low priority.
Meanwhile I'm stuck with a gas-guzzling, high-revving car that falls far short of expectations.
I'm hoping, Mr. Moat, that you'll agree that something should be done. And that you'll be able to convince your people to take an interest in restoring my car to normal operating conditions.
